Gifts That Give Back
In an attempt to maintain our mission for a sustainable future throughout the holiday season, at The Happy Labs we’d like to highlight some of our favorite brands that give 1% for the Planet or are certified in a manner that gives back or reduces their overall carbon footprint. This guide can help you become a conscious consumer, to select how you spend your dollars, to show appreciation for your loved ones this holiday.
Patagonia
This active gear and clothing line lives by the slogan “buy less, demand more,” encouraging consumers to buy used items. You can even shop their used gear section here. Patagonia also committed to using more recycled products in materials this past year, and incorporated hemp into more of its items. Among the many benefits of using hemp fiber, it uses less water to process with minimal irrigation or fertilization in relation to other types of crops, limits erosion, and actually adds more nutrients to the soil than it consumes. The company is also conscious of which suppliers they form partnerships with and ensure that they are also following sustainable processing practices. Patagonia shares, “Everything we make has an impact on people and the planet. So does everything you buy. The clothing industry contributes up to 10% of the pollution driving the climate crisis. And apparel workers are among the lowest paid in the world. That’s why we make high-quality clothes with recycled materials and promote fair and safe labor conditions for workers. There are some things you can do, too.” You can easily find outdoor accessories and clothing for anyone in the family, even at reduced pricing for the already loved pieces. Whether you buy new or used, you are helping support their overall, sustainable mission.
Rekurator
This eco-friendly lifestyle company encourages a zero waste home and provides the products to start converting your daily habits into more sustainable practices. Put together a little eco kit, full of items they can use like dish soap and scrubbers, or the pre-made gift set, all ready to be gifted. All of the company’s green home essentials are recyclable, biodegradable, or compostable.
Beyond Microgreens
This company created an easy way to consume microgreens daily, in a freeze-dried, spice cabinet format, to add just like dried herbs to any dish for a boost of nutrients. Their mission is, “to connect people with powerful plants to help fill the nutritional gaps in their diet.” The focus, recovery, and relax microteas are also a fun way to consume daily microgreens, and would be a great addition to any holiday gift box.
Earth Hero
This company is both certified for 1% for the Planet and B Corp Certified. They carry pretty much anything in the eco and sustainable categories to match your lifestyle including home cleaning supplies, storage bags and containers, clothing, travel gear, and so much more. Some fun ways to limit plastic use are reusable beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap, silicone zip lock bags instead of plastic bags, and using bars of soap instead of in disposable plastic bottles. Currently, for each order that you place, they will plant 5 trees. Have fun exploring the site to put together a custom holiday bundle!
Ecnoy Straws
Another area that is close to our hearts is preserving the oceans. Ecnoy Straws shares that, “Plastic isn't going away... but we can certainly reduce the amount we leave behind, one straw at a time.” With their products including telescopic keychain straws for on the go and shatter resistant glass straws, they make it easier to enjoy your favorite beverage while helping reduce the amount of plastic in our oceans.
