WHAT IS 1% FOR THE PLANET
1% for the Planet is a platform to join a community of businesses and individuals who commit to donating 1% of all annual sales to support environmental nonprofits. It is considered “a global movement inspiring businesses and individuals to support environmental solutions through annual memberships and everyday actions.”
Membership includes guidance on giving strategy, donation and charity certification, the ability to join multiple brands for membership, and even a potential product line collaboration if that is of interest.
There are currently over 3,000 members of 1% for the Planet worldwide. General business membership began when the organization was created in 2002, and individual memberships were added to the program in 2017. The founder of Patagonia, Yvon Chouinard and the founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, Craig Mathews, partnered to build the non-profit to help solve the world’s environmental problems. Patagonia had actually been donating 1% of all sales to environmental preservation since 1985. Both founders want to bring awareness to companies, that since the environment provides resources to ensure their financial success, it is also important to be conscious about consumption and production of said products while protecting the natural environment.
To stress the importance of the organization, only 3% of total philanthropy and charitable giving worldwide goes towards environmental efforts, according to Giving USA. This collective aims to create a movement for our planet’s preservation.
